Initial Situation
In several projects, existing reporting and Fiori scenarios needed
to be modernized: Quality Metrics (QM), Bills of Materials and
Production Planning (LO/PP), Supplier Quality Assurance (SQA),
Purchasing and Sales Bonuses. The existing data models had grown
historically and were only partly suitable for real-time reporting,
Fiori apps, and SAC.
The goal was to establish a standardized and high-performance CDS layer
that could be used for both operational Fiori apps and analytical
scenarios in BW/4HANA and SAP Analytics Cloud.
Goals
- Development of maintainable, reusable ABAP CDS Views
- Standardized data models for QM, FI/CO, SD and MM processes
- Provision of high-performance queries for Fiori, BW/4HANA and SAC
- Use of modern CDS features (Associations, Annotations, Aggregations, Joins)
- Unified KPI definitions and improved data quality
- Reduction of custom ABAP backend logic through clean CDS models
Approach & Architecture
At the beginning, business requirements from the departments (QM, Finance,
Purchasing, Sales, Production) were collected and transformed into logical
data models. Based on this, ABAP CDS Views were built in layers
(Basic, Consumption, and Analytical Views).
Typical technical focus areas:
- Development of ABAP CDS Views with SQL-optimized logic
- Use of Associations for flexible navigation between master and transactional data
- Use of Annotations for Fiori, analytical scenarios, and authorizations
- Aggregations, filters and views for quality metrics and supplier evaluations
- Integration of CDS Views into SAP Fiori apps, BW/4HANA models and SAC dashboards
- Targeted performance tuning (indexes, filter logic, data volume reduction)
Finally, documentation, knowledge transfer and handover to development
teams and business departments were carried out.
